It's Greek to Me:
Dunamis, Dynamite and Dynamo

"Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you." Acts 1.8

Certain words from the Greek New Testament find their way into regular church use. One such word is dunamis . It means power, strength, authority, enablement, capability or inherent power. From this word we get two English words: Dynamite and Dynamo. The contrast between these two expressions of power has a message to the church about the power of the Holy Spirit.

Like dynamite the power of the Holy Spirit is explosive. He bursts on the scene quickly and powerfully. The power of dynamite is destructive power. The power of the Spirit is also capable of destroying the strongholds of Satan.

But the Spirit is also a dynamo. The dynamo in a power plant is the unit which produces the power. This power is controlled, sustained power. It is creative power. It builds up rather than tearing down. Likewise, the Holy Spirit is controlled, sustained power. He will stay with you through whatever you face. He is also creative. He edifies the person and the body of Christ.

Have you experienced the dunamis, dynamite, dynamo power of the Holy Spirit in your life? If not, you can. Just ask and He will give this power to you.
